Each arrow overshot his head" (1902) by Elmer Boyd Smith.

In Norse Mythology Baldr was the god of peace, love, forgiveness, justice, and purity. He is one of the most important gods in Old Norse Mythology and is well known as the beautiful. Baldr had celebrations in midsummer which was his chief festival. He was also the son of Odin and Frigga. Baldr and his mother shared a terrifying dream about his mortality. Dreams were seen as prophetic especially when both had the same one. This terrified and depressed Baldr. His mother Frigg being concerned demanded that every object of all the realms make an oath to never touch or harm Baldr.

Odin his father foresaw that his life was in peril but didn't know all the details. When the crafty Loki heard what Frigg had done, he devised a plan and created a magical spear made of mistletoe which later became known as an arrow or dart. He placed it in the area where the gods gathered for their pastime of throwing objects at Baldr. Baldrs blind brother Hodur picked up the spear and hurled it at his unsuspected brother. It plunged deep into his flesh killing him instantly. Other versions say that Loki guided the projectile himself.

His death is the catalyst that will lead to Ragnarök. According to Völuspá, Baldr will be reborn after Ragnarök takes place in the new world.

Normans were the people who gave their name to Normandy, a region in northern France. They were descended from Viking conquerors lead by Rollo of the territory and the native Merovingian culture formed from Germanic Franks and Romanised Gauls. Their identity emerged initially in the first half of the 10th century, and gradually evolved over succeeding centuries.
